Palmistry, also known as chiromancy or palm reading, is the ancient art of interpreting personality traits and destiny trends through observation of the lines, shapes, and colors of the hands. Its history is nearly as old as civilization itself — references to palm reading can be found in the texts of ancient India, China, Egypt, and Babylonia. In Hindu tradition, palmistry is known as "Hast Samudrika Shastra" (the science of the ocean of the hand), a sacred body of knowledge; in China, palmistry shares deep roots with traditional Chinese medical diagnosis, where changes in the palm's color, temperature, and lines are used to assess internal organ health. The palm contains three principal lines: the Life Line begins between the thumb and index finger and curves toward the wrist, reflecting vitality and fundamental life energy rather than the length of one's lifespan; the Head Line starts near the origin of the Life Line and crosses the palm horizontally, relating to thinking patterns, learning ability, and intellectual inclinations; the Heart Line begins from the opposite side of the palm and extends toward the index and middle fingers, revealing emotional expression styles and relationship patterns. Additional lines such as the Fate Line (a vertical line from the wrist toward the middle finger) and Marriage Lines (horizontal lines below the base of the little finger) provide further information. Modern palmistry increasingly seeks to bridge traditional observation with scientific understanding. Research in dermatoglyphics has confirmed that palm lines form between the thirteenth and nineteenth weeks of fetal development, remain essentially unchanged throughout life, and that each person's fingerprints are unique. This lends a degree of scientific credence to palmistry — palm lines do carry unique biological information about the individual. Of course, palmistry is not an exact science; it is more like a mirror reflecting the inner self.
